Read Write Inc, Our Phonics Approach
Phonics is used to teach children how to decode, blend and learn to read. The Read Write Inc approach is a nationally recognised model. At Priestmead, we take the 4 classes in Reception and split them into 9, 10 or 11 smaller groups to target children to enable accelerated progress. This model is also used in Y1. Children are reassessed every 6-9 weeks and groups changed accordingly.
Our vision is that every child is confident in phonics so they can access reading, the curriculum and more importantly the world around them.
It is a huge financial investment having such small groups, but we believe in the importance of knowing how to read.
We have seen a positive impact on our Phonics Screening results at the end of Y1 since we introduced this approach in 2015:

Phonics is overseen by the wonderful Mrs Lloyd. She ensures all staff are trained, supported, resources are in place and high quality teaching and learning takes place. Through her leadership we have seen our results rocket from 76% to 93% in just two years.
